Matthew Shardlake is a lawyer who has links to Thomas Cromwell, in a time when the religious beliefs you held could get you at best sent to the Tower of London and at worst burned at the stake or hanged. C.J. Sansom brings 1540's London to life. His descriptions of the time, almost enables you to smell the streets of London as you walk, ride and run them with Master Shardlake. These are magnificent books set in the time of Henry VIII, you can almost feel the terror of the populus living in the political powder keg of the time as well as the thrill of the chase.
If you get lost in a book as you read like I do, then the descriptions of 1540's London as if it were the present day will sweep you back in time with a clever but ever so unlikely hero, Matthew Shardlake stands out with his honesty and humility. He is a modern thinking man who stands out in a time when power and money were all that mattered.
